At the Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Center, we are incredibly proud of the dedication and passion our Director of Programming and Events, Linda Harris, brings to spreading the legacy of Harriet Tubman and other freedom seekers far beyond our walls. Through powerful presentations, performances, and lectures, Linda—alongside her husband, David B. Cole—recently traveled to the states of Pennsylvania and Delaware to share the rich and inspiring history of Harriet Tubman’s fight for freedom. Here's a glimpse into their recent adventures!

Performing at the History Book Festival in Lewes, Delaware

One of the highlights of Linda and David’s recent travels was performing at the History Book Festival in Lewes, Delaware, where they had the great honor of sharing the stage with Dr. Tiya uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu uhuu Miles, a Harvard professor and award-winning author of Night Flyer. With a packed house in attendance, Dr. Miles captivated the audience with her storytelling, and Linda and David complemented the evening with their own artistic contribution—sharing the history and sounds of "Code Songs" that Harriet Tubman and other freedom seekers used on the Underground Railroad. The event was a true success: Dr. Miles sold many copies of her book, and Linda and David’s CD was popular with attendees.

Presenting at the ASALH Conference in Pittsburgh

Before their stop in Lewes, Linda and David headed to Pittsburgh for the 108th ASALH (Association for the Study of African American Life and History) Conference. Sponsored by the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, the conference was a powerful gathering of scholars, educators, and activists dedicated to preserving and promoting African American history. Linda and David presented a moving lecture on the importance of “Code Songs”—the secretive and spiritual music used by Harriet Tubman and other freedom seekers to communicate during their dangerous journeys. Their performance resonated with the audience, illustrating how music was not just a source of hope, but also a practical tool in the fight for freedom.

Continuing the Journey

Linda and David’s travels are a perfect example of their deep commitment to not only preserving Harriet Tubman’s story but ensuring it reaches as many people as possible. Whether performing at conferences or sharing intimate conversations with authors like Dr. Tiya Miles, their work brings Tubman’s legacy to life for new audiences. Through each event, they continue to inspire others to learn more about the Underground Railroad, the fight for freedom, and the role of the Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Center in honoring these legacies.

As Linda and David continue to travel and educate, we invite you to follow their journey and support the important work of the Harriet Tubman Museum. Their adventures remind us that history is not confined to the past; it’s alive in the stories we tell, the songs we sing, and the lives we touch.

Stay tuned for more updates on Linda and David’s adventures, and thank you to everyone who supports our mission to keep Harriet Tubman’s legacy shining bright!
